Boxes of many sizes and shapes were decorated by the students for various uses. These were used for keeping their precious needlework and its tools, storing their letters and documents and securing their prized possessions. They also gave them as special gifts and mementos to beloved family and friends.

You will see formal pieces decorated by the city girls, usually attending academies, seminaries, or under private instruction in their homes. Their pieces would have been made by city cabinetmakers like the Seymour’s, Sheraton, and Vose & Coates.

In the country, traveling teachers taught at the village church or meetinghouse. Farm girls, ages 10-15, would stay in homes of local families while the teacher was in the area. The village cabinetmaker or a family member would make a piece for the girl to decorate.

Frequently they signed their pieces and wrote charming poems and endearments on their work. Many of these treasured, and now extremely rare artifacts, were handed down from generation to generation.
