Sewing played a vital roll in a woman’s life. Women used their free time sewing, mending, creating embroidery, needlepoint and many other methods of needlework. Handwork was stored in the sliding pouch of their sewing table. Divided and segmented drawers kept their threads, thimbles, precious needles, and emeries organized and from getting lost. The tables with casters could be moved around rooms for the comfort of the one using the table. It could be placed near the warm fire or next to an open window to enjoy the cool breezes while she worked on her needlework. PLEASE NOTE: Two yards of silk or lighter weight fabrics are needed for the pouch. Two yards of lining fabric, light weight, are also needed to line the interior of the pouch. Two yards of decorative trim are needed, if you want to accent the top and base of the pouch. Please provide ample trim material bag. I provide appropriate materials including upholstery, at a cost of $250.00.My upholsterer’s work for two major auction houses in New York City. *Note: We line each pouch with a solid piece of aromatic cedar cut to size and shape that weights the bag. It is sewn between the lining and outer pouch.

The educated woman frequently used a ‘work table’ for various household tasks. These tables were used for her letter writing, reading drawing and painting. As the main record-keeper of the family, her designs for the family samplers and mourning pictures would be created on these tables.

Bedchambers were not the private areas in the home during the later1700’s as they are today. The woman of the house would receive her friends and have tea, poetry readings and visitations with a small group of her family and intimate friends. Her decorated chamber or dressing table was one of her most cherished possessions.
