| Wooden, paper and fabric screens were used by the ladies
of the gentry in this period for a variety of reasons. A complex set of
signals for face screens evolved, providing the courting lady with a subtle
means of communicating with her beau. Messages ranged from “I love you”,
indicated by drawing the fan across the cheek, to “I wish to be rid of
you”, stated by placing the fan on the left ear.
Table and floor screens were typically used to shield a lady’s face from
the heat of a fire. This was not only to preserve the pale complexion,
which was fashionable at the time, but also to protect her makeup, which
was wax based.
I offer a variety of shapes in both hand-held, table and floor screens.
Face Screen Handles are hand turned and are available in: Ebony, Rosewood,
Mahogany and Maple. The turning, size, and style of the handles I have
chosen, compliment the design of the screen shape. Sizes are strictly
the face screens measurements, without the handles. |
